Urban Bat Research in Tamale, N/R, Ghana

Urbanisation poses a significant threat to biodiversity, including bats, which play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance and controlling pests, among others. Given the potential impacts of urbanisation on biodiversity loss, we have secured funding (i.e., IDEA WILD and Rufford Foundation) to document bat roosts and species, as well as explore local community perceptions and raise public awareness of bats in the Greater Tamale Area, which encompasses the Tamale Metropolis and the Sagnarigu Municipal Assembly in the Northern Region, Ghana. Thus, this project aims to assess the impacts of urban development on bat roosts and habitats, informing bat conservation within this rapidly evolving landscape while considering other human dimensions, such as perceptions and attitudes. Esther leads the project with Eric as a co-lead and a dedicated research/field team, including Tony, Damba, and Huzaima. We are committed to ensuring that these vital species have a future even in changing environments.
